The next generation of safe cooking using steam and air frying
Our problem statement
How might we use kitchen robots to help blind and low-vision people cook safely and independently?
Anna's context
The primary user is Bot Handy, a one-armed robot who tirelessly assists Anna with tedious home tasks like cooking and cleaning. Anna, the secondary user, is a teacher passionate about culinary arts. However, her visual impairment introduces risks like cutting or burning herself while cooking.

of visually impaired individuals report that their condition makes it difficult to prepare and cook meals. Many experience a lack of confidence and constant concern for safety in the kitchen.
Europeans are currently experiencing some form of sight loss. This high prevalence affects over 30 million people, highlighting an urgent need for accessible and inclusive solutions in the home.

Risk of burning
How can we properly leverage the robot's capabilities to directly assist Anna without interrupting her preferred daily workflow?
How can this design grant her maximum autonomy? Where are the exact crucial points she needs help versus those she must control?
Which tasks are tedious or unenjoyable and could be automated? How can we preserve or enhance Anna's engagement in this process?
What are the existing solutions and their fundamental limitations? What exact safety protocols must this robotic system enforce?
Sketch video
As we delved into exploration, one aspect involved creating cardboard prototypes and testing them via a video sketch. An insight we gained was the interaction between the container‘s content and the cooking unit.
01 Planning
Anna selects her recipe and sends a quick digital request. Bot Handy then safely gathers and organizes all the necessary ingredients for the meal.
02 Preparation
Anna prepares the food by chopping, seasoning, and mixing the ingredients. She then portions the different dishes into their designated cooking containers.
03 Scanning
Using her smartphone app, Anna scans each filled container. She verbally confirms the contents to log all the exact ingredients into Bot Handy's system.
04 Placing
Once everything is logged, Bot Handy's robotic arm activates. It carefully picks up each container and securely clicks it into place on the device.
05 Cooking
Bot Handy automatically manages the precise cooking cycle. It regulates different temperatures and timings so the contents of each container cook perfectly.
06 Serving
Once the food is fully prepared, Bot Handy safely serves the containers directly to the table. Anna can now relax and enjoy her delicious hot meal.
Steam and airfry your favorite ingredients for healthy, nutrient-rich meals. Atmos delivers perfect crispness without any added fat.
Atmos

Atmos doubles as a versatile traditional oven for total cooking flexibility. Its sleek profile effortlessly blends into any modern kitchen space.

The system features a remarkably clean and simple design language. It brings sophisticated minimalism and premium textures directly to your countertop.

Double-walled containers keep steam safely enclosed while preventing burns. The stackable design saves space and enables fully hands-free cooking.

Users easily label containers using a voice-guided app. This smart digital tagging tells Bot Handy exactly how to prepare each dish.

Steam activates solely when a container covers the ports. This establishes a safe, sealed environment for heat circulation and perfectly even cooking.
